This year, we will be welcoming a new teacher to our Music Department. Mr. Burgess will be replacing Mr. Nardine as our Band Teacher, and we are very excited to see how this year will progress.

February Concerts

Thank you to all who attended our Winter Band concert on Thursday the 11th.

Our next concert in the E.O. Smith Music Department is on Thursday, February 25th at 7:00 P.M. This is a Chorus concert dedicated to survivors and victims of the Holocaust. Please attend, as this is a major event for our Chorus.

Also, to let everyone know, the E.O. Smith Fine Arts and Ag. Ed. Departments are hosting a Haiti Benefit dinner on Wednesday, March 3rd from 5:30 - 7:00 P.M. All profits go through Roots of Development to the island of le Gonave. The theme of the dinner is "Soup-er Haiti Dinner." There will be soup, bread, and fabulous entertainment. The cost is $10.

Band Concert

The E.O. Smith Band program will be performing its 2009-2010 schoolyear Winter Concert this Thursday, February 11, 2010 at 7:00 PM. It will include three fun jazz pieces, four magnificent pieces from our Freshmen Band, and another four incredible works from our Concert band. The concert is free, so please come support our E.O. Smith Band program.

Also, the E.O. Smith Choral program will be putting on a concert dedicated to the Holocaust. The concert will be on Thursday, February 25, 2010 at 7:00 PM, which is the Thursday after February vacation. Please come and show your support for the victims and survivors of the Holocaust.

Concert!

This Friday, December 18th, at 7:00 P.M., there will be a benefit concert, the Messiah Sing! This concert will involve members of our Chorus and Orchestra, as well as professional soloists from the University of Connecticut, singing Handel's Messiah. The cost is $5, and audience members are invited to sing with the chorus. Just bring your own copy or rent one at the door.

The audience will be seated in five sections: Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass, Non-Singers.

Again, the concert is this Friday, December 18th, at 7:00 and the cost is $5, unless you wish to rent a copy.

TORONTO PAYMENT #2 IS DUE ON DECEMBER 11, 2009. STUDENTS NEED TO SIGN UP FOR ROOMING ASSIGNMENTS ON THE CHORUS ROOM DOOR.

CITRUS/CHEESECAKE WILL ARRIVE ON WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 9, 2009. PLEASE PICK UP YOUR ITEMS BEFORE 6:00 PM. STUDENTS ARE ASKED TO COME DOWN TO THE FINE ARTS / AG ED DEPARTMENTS TO HELP DURING THE DAY AND AFTERSCHOOL.

Thanks go to everyone who attended our recent concerts. The Messiah Sing (involving Chorus and Orchestra) is on Friday, December 18th, 2009.

All New England auditions are this coming Saturday. Any student who is attending needs to have turned in a General Permission slip. The bus will leave AT 7:30 AM. The bus cannot wait for any late arrivals. Please plan on arriving for the bus by 7:15 AM or so. Good luck to anyone auditioning.

The next Music Parents Association meeting will be on Tuesday, January 19, 2009. All parents are invited to come.

Hello Parents/Guardians of Music Students!

If this is your first year with us, then welcome to the E.O. Smith Fine Arts Department! If not, welcome back! There are a lot of music department events in store for this year! However, to do all of the stuff we do, we need your support. Please join the E.O. SMITH MUSIC PARENTS! This group of parents/guardians meets every third Tuesday of the month. This month's meeting is on October 20th. If you can, the e-mail to join is in the mailing you received at the beginning of the year. Also in the mailing was a yellow piece of paper- the GENERAL PERMISSION SLIP. This covers everything the ensembles do throughout the year, and we need those turned in to each ensemble as you can. If your child is in multiple ensembles, you only need to turn in one, but please have your child notify his/her other music teachers as to who will have the form- Mr. Nardine (Band), Mr. Chaurette (Orchestra), or Ms. Rowe (Chorus).

If you have any questions, Music Parents officers' e-mail addresses are up on the other website (www.eosmithmusic.org), and the music teachers' e-mails are up on the E.O. Smith website (www.eosmith.org).

Also, please make sure that your child got a UNIFORM on Friday, September 11, and has BLACK SOCKS/SHOES and BLACK SHOES for all of the concerts. Black socks/leggings and black shoes are required for all concerts. Shoes may not be open-toed.

EOS Music Parents Meeting - Sept 15

Music Department picnic (June 4)

Chaffeeville Rd (off Rte 195, Mansfield Center)

Students must sign up and pay by May 22. The cost is $20 per studient and includes the use of the facility, snacks and a cookout.

We will leave the school by bus to Holiday Hill. Parents must pick up their child at Holiday Hill at the end of the picnic. There is NO bus returning to the high school. Students may NOT drive to the facility (school policy).

Senior Awards Night - Scholarship Recipients (May 27)

Music Parents Association (MPA) will be awarding scholarships to students who are planning to study Music Performance or Music Education after graduation.

Congratulations to this year's recipients!

Spencer Hamlin – University of Connecticut

Susan Mostowy, President of MPA, will present each student with a $250 scholarship check on behalf of MPA.

Tri-M Induction Ceremony (June 3)

The Tri-M Induction Ceremony will be held on June 3, 2009 at 7 pm in the Chorus room.

Lou DiLoreto will be attending and will be inducted as an honorary member of Tri-M along with all of our other inductees.

Chamber Singers - National Honor Society Awards (June 10)

EOS HS Graduation will be held on June 19 at Jorgensen Auditorium, UConn campus. Attendance is required for band and chorus students

Band reports to below stage area at 5:15.

Chorus reports to mezzanine at 5:30.

Dress: Boys – dress shirt, pants and shoes, long tie. Girls – skirt/blouse or dress (knee length or longer) or dress pants/shirt, dress shoes.

Music Parents Association Meeting (May 19) - Highlights

The last MPA meeting of the 2008-9 school year was held on May 19. Unfortunately, this was Susan Mostowy's last meeting as President. We thank her for her outstanding support and leadership during her tenure! A new President will be named over the summer.
Here are highlights from the MPA meeting:
- EO Smith Foundation Grant was received in the amount of $1400 which is enough to fund the cost of a computer and networking for one practice room to have Smart Music available.
- Music Parents have donated $1000 to help fund the cost of equipping a second training room with computer and networking and Smart Music
- The meeting date for Music Parents will be moved to the third Tuesday of the month beginning in September 2009.
- A Music Parents banner will be ordered before the beginning of the school year. We decided to spend between $100 and $200 for the banner which will be used at Open House, and all concerts at the refreshment table.
- The current slate of officers (Susan Mostowy, Peter Stevens and Lauren Olson) will meet after the school year is over to revamp the bylaws and create a succession plan, position and task descriptions, etc.
- There may be a mid-August meeting to put the new organization’s plans into place before school starts.

Memorial Day Marching

Attention anyone in Band! Check here on Memorial Day for up-to-date information on what's up.

IF IT IS NICE OUT: Be at BASSETT'S BRIDGE (Route 195) by 8:15 A.M.
We will march in Mansfield down 195 to the cemetery and back. After that,
we will bus to ASHFORD - the Fire Station on Route 89. We will march to
Pompey Hollow Park, but not back. You may be picked up there (it is on
Route 44, across from Cumby's.) or be bussed back to EO / Bassett's
Bridge.

IF IT IS A MESS: Go to MANSFIELD MIDDLE SCHOOL instead, but still by 8:15.
We will play there, but NOT at Ashford, so be picked up there.

MAKE SURE YOUR UNIFORM HAS: The white shirt, black pants, Cumberbun, Bowtie, Black
Shoes, and Black Socks.

LEAVE YOUR CASES AT HOME!

Benefit Concert!

Next Friday, March 6, a benefit concert will be held at the Storrs Congregational Church, 2 North Eagleville Road (corner of Rte. 195 and North Eagleville Road). A combination of Orchestra, Band, and Chorus students will be performing a piece titled Magnificat and a piece by Vivaldi. It will begin at 7pm. The cost is $10 with a non-perishable item, or $11 without. The profits will go towards three different local charities. We hope to see you then!

Congratulations everyone for that magnificent concert. Please erase all markings on your music if you are not keeping it. Music needs to be erased and returned by the Friday after break. Marching season is coming, so be ready to learn the new music quickly so we can get a jump-start on marching music.
